How To Deal With Bad Interviews pt 2- Distracted Interviewers

The only way to deal with this is to be as focused as you can be yourself.

This chapter in The Interviewing Series addresses how candidates can handle interviews when the interviewer is distracted. While interviewers can sometimes have off days, it’s important for candidates to remain focused and avoid allowing the distractions to affect their performance. The chapter emphasizes that interviewers are human, and their distractions may have valid reasons, such as urgent issues they’re dealing with. The key to handling this situation is to stay calm and concentrate on showcasing your own abilities, even in less-than-ideal circumstances.

One of the most practical pieces of advice is to structure your answers carefully, especially for a distracted interviewer. By including "metadata"—clear signals to organize and break down your answers—you make it easier for the interviewer to follow, even if they’re not fully engaged. Instead of telling a disjointed story, use clear categories to group related points together. For example, when describing a project you managed, break it down into clear areas like "clarity of expectations" and "daily roadblock resolution meetings," making your response much easier to follow. This helps maintain clarity and keeps the interview focused, even if the interviewer’s attention is divided.

Lastly, the chapter advises candidates not to draw attention to the interviewer’s distractions. While it may feel like a polite gesture to ask if the interviewer is too busy to continue or should reschedule, doing so can make the situation worse. It could highlight the interviewer’s inadequacy and cause tension, which will only add more stress. Instead, the chapter encourages candidates to stay composed, demonstrate focus, and accept the interview as it is. After all, your goal is to showcase your professionalism, even when circumstances are not ideal.
