Disclaimer:

This content was originally written back in the early 2000's and 2010's, and references Skype as the primary teleconference platform. This is obviously not the case anymore, but the audio has not been redone to reflect this. We've updated a majority of the Synopsis to reflect teleconferencing as a whole, using Skype, Zoom, Teams, or whatever platform you or your prospective employers prefer.

It doesn't matter what kind of interview you're going to, from an informal conversation over coffee to a presentation to the board:
An interview is an interview.

Skype and Zoom interviews are becoming increasingly common, and while they share many similarities with in-person interviews, there are unique challenges that require extra attention. In this chapter of "Hired! The Interviewing Series," you'll be guided through essential preparation steps to ensure a professional teleconference interview experience. From preparing in advance to handling the day-of logistics, this advice will help you make a great impression, even from the comfort of your own home. It's important to approach a teleconference interview with the same level of seriousness and preparation as any other job interview.

The first step is preparing your environment and technology. You'll want to ensure your computer is set up at the right height and angle, ensuring you’re framed well on camera. Also, avoid a casual setting—opt for a clean, professional background, ideally in an office-type chair. Dress the part by wearing a complete outfit, not just from the waist up, as unexpected situations could reveal more than you intend. Additionally, practicing energy and focus is key, as being at home can sometimes make it easier to get distracted or appear less engaged.

Finally, on the day of the interview, there are practical steps to take for the best performance. Close unnecessary apps to prevent distractions, and if you need notes, keep them printed and accessible without constantly looking down. Set up well in advance—give yourself time to troubleshoot any tech issues and ensure you’re fully prepared 30 minutes before the interview. By following these tips, you’ll minimize potential disruptions and present yourself confidently, showing that you’re serious about the opportunity, even in a virtual setting.
