Lesson 16: How to Handle the "Leadership Style" Question

This is perhaps the third most important interviewing question, after, "Tell me about yourself," and behavioral questions.

This audio chapter of The Interviewing Series is designed to help you answer the tough interview question, "Describe your leadership style." It emphasizes the importance of preparing for the question by reflecting on your past accomplishments as a leader, focusing on how you communicated, motivated, and guided your teams. By reviewing your experiences, you can identify key themes and behaviors that define your leadership style, such as goal-setting, delegation, and communication. The podcast stresses that thinking about your DISC profile can also provide insight into your natural leadership tendencies.

When delivering your answer, the episode suggests starting with a clear, concise sentence that defines your leadership style. This allows you to immediately address the question and then expand upon your answer with specific examples. The key is to paint a vivid picture for the interviewer by explaining how you approach leadership in real situations. Avoid vague phrases like "I like to..." or "You need to..." and instead focus on concrete actions that show your leadership in practice.

Finally, the chapter addresses the crucial final test that often follows this question: providing a real-world example of a time you led a team. Your answer should align with the leadership themes you've just outlined. By following these guidelines, you will be able to give a strong, memorable response that helps you stand out in interviews, showcasing your leadership skills and communication abilities.
