What Are You Looking For?

Most people think that the art of answering this question well is to be as vague as possible so that in that huge net they cast, the recruiter's perfect answer will be caught.
They are wrong.

In the second chapter of the "Effective Interview Series," the focus is on the recruiter’s question, “What are you looking for?” This question plays a pivotal role in determining whether or not a recruiter will move forward with your candidacy. Many candidates falter at this question by being too vague or hesitant, which often leads to frustration from recruiters. To stand out, candidates must answer confidently, knowing exactly what they want in terms of industry, responsibilities, and skills, while maintaining an open-minded approach to other opportunities that may arise.

The cast emphasizes the importance of clarity in your response. It’s crucial to be succinct and to the point, as recruiters want to quickly assess whether you’re a potential fit for the roles they’re recruiting for. Candidates should not be vague or evasive, as recruiters are not career counselors and are unlikely to help you figure out your preferences. Instead, having a clear understanding of what you want, and being able to communicate that professionally, increases your chances of getting the recruiter’s attention and gaining their support in finding the right job.

While it’s important to be clear about your preferences, the cast also advises being flexible. Showing that you're open to considering various industries or roles while still keeping a focus on your core skills and interests demonstrates that you’re adaptable and open to new opportunities. The cast further guides candidates on how to break down their wants into key categories like industry, prime responsibilities, skills, and work environment, providing a structured way to present your preferences. By being clear yet flexible, you’ll be well-prepared for follow-up questions and ready to discuss opportunities that best match your goals.
