Assessment Centers - Team Problem Solving

Just like every test you took in school, the first thing you need to do is read the instructions carefully.

Team problem-solving exercises at assessment centers are designed to assess key competencies such as communication, strategic thinking, and collaboration. When you’re given a scenario, start by reading the instructions carefully, and try to understand what’s being assessed. These exercises are not about finding the "right" answer but about demonstrating teamwork and problem-solving skills. Make sure to read the scenario thoroughly within the time limit, underline key points to focus your attention, and avoid getting caught up in stress or assumptions.

When choosing your role in the exercise, it’s important to align it with the job you're applying for. Don’t feel pressured to take charge if the situation doesn’t call for leadership. In roles that require teamwork, you may need to demonstrate communication skills, the ability to listen, and collaboration. Assess the scenario and adapt accordingly—some situations may involve problem-solving without a clear answer, and your ability to work with others is what matters most. Leadership may emerge naturally, but effective communication and cooperation should always be your priority.

In many cases, there is no definitive "right" answer to the problems posed during these exercises. Success lies in the group’s ability to work together and agree on a solution. For example, in a survival scenario, there are various ways to solve the problem, and the exercise is more about the team’s process rather than finding one perfect answer. By staying calm, collaborating, and demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively, you’ll show that you’re capable of working well in a team, a key trait in any job.
