How To Deal With Bad Interviews pt 3 - Interviewers Who Talk Too Much

It doesn't matter how inane the question, or how rude the interviewer, answer the question you're asked.

This chapter in The Interviewing Series addresses the issue of interviewers who dominate the conversation, preventing candidates from sharing their experiences and answering questions fully. The advice is clear: always answer the question you're asked, no matter how off-base or rude the interviewer may be. Even if the interviewer tries to control the interview, it’s important to stay focused and respond directly, as avoiding the question won’t help and could create further tension.

The next piece of advice is how to handle an interviewer who interrupts or answers their own questions. In these cases, it’s important to assertively interrupt once, especially if the interviewer doesn’t seem bothered by it. This is often more common with certain personality types, like high D's or I's, who are more assertive in nature. By continuing to speak or interrupting strategically, you may be able to steer the conversation back to you, allowing you to share the information you need. It’s also a chance to learn from these interviewers and adapt your own communication style if necessary.

Lastly, the chapter tackles the issue of inappropriate comments made by talkative interviewers. Whether it’s about your age, appearance, or other personal matters, the advice is to respond calmly and directly, addressing the comment without escalating the situation. If the interviewer’s comment is inappropriate, it’s often best to correct them without becoming defensive, and if they are simply thoughtless, you’ve now had the opportunity to address any concerns. Ultimately, the chapter encourages you to remain professional, even when faced with difficult interviewers, and move on if the interview goes poorly.
