How to Handle a Group Interview

One of the worst ideas in interviewing is the GROUP interview. But, since you may very well get one at some point, we have a simple set of suggestions to help you make it through.
When you are in a group interview, you must simply modify the way you handle your eye contact with the questioner.

In this episode of The Interviewing Series, the focus is on the growing prevalence of group interviews. While Mark doesn’t advocate for group interviews due to their inefficiency, he acknowledges that they are becoming more common and offers three simple strategies to handle them with ease. The key message is that group interviews don’t have to be intimidating, and with the right approach, candidates can perform well and leave a lasting impression.

The first crucial tip is to adjust your eye contact strategy during a group interview. Mark advises starting your eye contact with the person who asked the question, then including the rest of the interviewers in the middle of your answer, and finishing with the initial questioner. This technique ensures you engage with everyone in the room without making anyone feel excluded, although there are exceptions if an interviewer is far out of your line of sight.

The second and third tips focus on being socially graceful: admitting when you forget someone's name and being willing to ask for it politely, and writing individual thank-you notes to each interviewer. Both actions show humility and professionalism, leaving a positive impression. These small but impactful steps can set you apart from other candidates, making it clear that you’re thoughtful and detail-oriented.
