Lesson 11: How to Close an Interview

Closing is the single most powerful technique we know of in interviewing.

Closing an interview effectively is one of the most powerful strategies a candidate can use, yet it remains underutilized. The key is to confidently express your interest by saying, “I want an offer, and here’s why,” followed by two or three specific reasons the company and role appeal to you. This statement is not about asking for an offer outright but about demonstrating enthusiasm in a way that makes you stand out. Most candidates simply express general interest, but closing in this direct manner creates a lasting impression and significantly improves your chances of success.

Many interviewees hesitate to close, fearing it may seem too forward. However, recruiters appreciate candidates who show energy and excitement, and closing demonstrates exactly that. Interviewers spend most of their time listening to uninspired, generic responses, so a strong, confident closing statement will make you memorable. If an offer is extended on the spot, respond with excitement, but remember that stating your interest does not obligate you to accept. The goal is to accumulate as many offers as possible, keeping your options open while making a strong impact.

To execute this technique effectively, preparation is key. Before the interview, candidates should reflect on why they are genuinely interested in the company and role. The closing should be delivered at the right moment—either after asking final questions or as the interview concludes. Even if speaking with multiple interviewers in one day, it’s important to close with each one, reinforcing your enthusiasm. Mastering this method will set you apart from other candidates, making closing the "Holy Grail" of interviewing.
