Lesson 6: Interview Introductions

Remember to show ENERGY ENERGY ENERGY. This conversation helps make the recruiter feel comfortable.

The first moments of an interview, often referred to as the Introduction, set the stage for the entire conversation and are critical for making a strong impression. In this segment, the interviewer will form an initial judgment, and it’s estimated that 75% of interview outcomes are influenced by these early interactions. This portion of the interview consists of four main stages: immediate preparation, entering the room, greeting, and the introductory conversation. Preparation starts a few minutes before you enter the room, with a focus on adjusting your appearance, reviewing your questions, and psyching yourself up to bring energy and enthusiasm to the table.

Once you enter the room, it’s important to do so with confidence. A strong knock on the door and an energetic, purposeful entrance can immediately establish a positive tone. When it comes to greeting, a firm handshake and eye contact are essential to conveying professionalism and confidence. Introduce yourself by name, and if necessary, politely ask the interviewer for theirs. Remember, using first names during the interview is usually the preferred approach, creating a friendly and approachable atmosphere.

The introductory conversation is a key part of the interview, where many candidates struggle. It’s not only about discussing relevant topics but also about conveying energy and enthusiasm. Being knowledgeable about current national and business news is crucial, as you may be expected to engage in discussions about politics, sports, and the industry in which the company operates. Demonstrating your ability to be a good conversationalist by commenting on topics and asking questions in return helps the interviewer feel comfortable. Above all, showing energy and a positive demeanor can significantly impact the success of your interview.
